About Us

The West Nova Scotia Regiment is an Army Reserve (Militia) Unit located in the Annapolis Valley.  The unit headquarters is located in Camp Aldershot, north of Kentville.  Platoons are located in Aldershot,Windsor and Middleton and Bridgewater. The unit trains Thursday evenings (7 -10 pm) (Bridgewater trains on Wednesday nights) and one or two weekends per month. As a member of the West Nova Scotia Regiment you would train on these dates and, if available, would be eligible for periods of employment of longer duration especially during the summer months when many of our trades qualification courses are held. Opportunities also exist for reservists to train with Regular Force units and for direct transfer to the Regular Force once you have completed basic Infantry training.

A Brief History of the West Nova Scotia Regiment

The West NSR is one of the oldest Regiments on the Canadian Militia List. The Regiment was formed from both the 69th Annapolis Regiment (1717) and the 75th Lunenburg Regiment (1870) in 1936. Both Regiments descended from the 40th Regiment of Foot, the Prince of Wales Volunteers, which was raised on the 23rd of August 1717 at Fort Anne, Annapolis Royal, NS. The West NSR also perpetuate the 112th and 219th Battalions of Infantry, Canadian Expeditionary Force which were formed for service in World War I.

When World War II broke out (Sept, lst, 1939), the - West NSR was mobilized, as an active; service force battalion.  On June 15,.1943 the Regiment embarked from Eingland in the first part of Operation Husky - the invasion of Sicily. The West NSR was the first allied unit to land and stay on the continent of Europe for the entire duration of the war.

The Regiment continued to fight in Italy until February 9, 1945, when they were transferred from Italy to Northwest Europe. The Regiment moved to Marseilles, France, by sea and arrived in Germany on April 4. The Regiment continued its advance through Germany and into Holland until the German surrender on May 5, 1945. During this time the Regiment won twenty six theatre and battle honours in addition to the members of the unit being awarded many individual awards. From Sicily to Holland there are 352 graves of the West Novas who made the supreme sacrifice during the war. There were also 1084 wounded and missing.

Since World War II, the West NSR has contributed soldiers to UN Peace keeping tours in countries such as the former Yugoslavia, Cyprus and the Middle East. Our soldiers have participated in unit training and in bases across Canada, the United States and Great Britain.
