How to Apply

Canada's Army Reserve in Nova Scotia is looking for young Canadians to join its ranks. No prior experience is necessary; we will train you. The BMQ (Basic Military Qualification) Course will introduce you to life as a soldier. You will be taught how to use the C7A1 Canadian Service Rifle. You will learn skills such as Navigation, NBCD (Nuclear Biological Chemical Defence), and Basic Fieldcraft. You will also learn transferable skills such as Teamwork, Self-discipline, and First Aid.

In order to enrol in the Canadian Forces, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a Canadian Citizen
  • Be 17 years of age, or 16 with parents' permission
  • Have a minimum grade 10 education at a provincial standard
  • Be free of any legal obligations

You will be required to complete an Employment Application Form (DND 2170). You are also required to provide the following supporting documentation:

  • Original transcripts for your level of education (high school, college, and/or university)
  • Social Insurance Number (SIN) card
  • Birth certificate
  • Proof of trades or qualifications
  • Proof of marital status (if applicable)
  • Letters of reference (Officer applicants only)

Upon receipt of the above documents and your Application, you will start a sreening process. The procees involves Aptitude Testing, Medical Examination, and Fitness Evaluation; as well as a series of interviews and a Reliability Check.

 1.  The first thing to do is visit the WNSR unit located in Aldershot, N.S.  The unit trains on Thursday evenings, and this would be a good time for you to see what the troops do for regular training. You will be provided with the various forms to be filled out and the list of required supporting documents. What is Next?

Once the above documents have been received, your application is forwarded to Halifax for processing.  Unfortunately, processing can take a number of months to complete as we thoroughly check your application.  It is crucial that you have all required documentation, and that all forms are filled in properly.  If you need help in completing a document, please let us know.
